The Transformative Power of My Apprenticeship Journey

By Jaylien Rivera

Youth apprenticeships are more than just an opportunity. They are a pathway to growth, self-discovery, and a brighter future. As a project coordinator apprentice at the Department of Youth & Community Development (DYCD) in New York City, I’ve experienced firsthand how this program can shape not only a career but a person.

Currently balancing high school at the Women’s Academy of Excellence in the Bronx and my apprenticeship, I work afternoons at DYCD managing reports, invoices, and contracts while conducting program evaluations and supporting the discretionary team. Each task offers a valuable learning opportunity, helping me build essential skills for my future.

A Life-Changing Opportunity

This apprenticeship has brought about so many positive changes in my life. For one, I don’t have to depend on my mom too much anymore. I’ve gained financial independence, which has allowed me to purchase things I never thought I could afford. I pay my phone bill monthly and even treated myself to an iPad.

The apprenticeship also opened doors I never expected. I meet new people every day, creating incredible networking opportunities. A highlight was attending the 60th Anniversary of Community Development event at the United Nations. Representing DYCD at such a prestigious event was unforgettable and reinforced the impact of the work we do.

The apprenticeship opportunity came to me during my sophomore year of high school, thanks to Donovan Plummer, who visited my school to recruit apprentices. At the time, I was looking for extracurricular activities, and when I found out the program was paid, I knew I had to apply.

The recruitment process itself was a learning experience—filming an elevator pitch, creating a CareerWise profile, and applying to several organizations taught me professional skills before I even started working. After selecting DYCD as the best fit, I completed summer training to prepare for the challenges ahead.

For students considering an apprenticeship, the process may seem daunting, but it’s worth every step. The preparation equips you with tools to succeed in a professional environment, and the rewards are life-changing.

What Makes DYCD Special

DYCD’s mission is to invest in community-based organizations and programs that alleviate poverty and create opportunities for New Yorkers to flourish. Working in this dynamic environment has given me a deep appreciation for how public service can change lives.

One of the most rewarding aspects of my role is seeing the impact of our work in action. Whether it’s organizing files to streamline operations or assisting with evaluations that enhance program effectiveness, every task contributes to the larger mission of community development.

Skills That Build a Foundation for the Future

Although my ultimate goal is to work in healthcare, specifically as a Critical Care Specialist in the ICU, the skills I’m gaining through this apprenticeship will serve me in any field.

For example, I’ve learned to navigate difficult conversations with poise, write professional reports, and manage my time effectively. I also take monthly training sessions, including topics like IT and cybersecurity, which have broadened my skill set even further.

Additionally, I’ve grown comfortable with public speaking. Though I had taken classes in high school, practicing it regularly through my apprenticeship has significantly improved my confidence. These lessons will be invaluable in healthcare, where precision, teamwork, and communication are crucial.

Why Apprenticeships Matter

Apprenticeships are more than just a job. They are an opportunity to gain real-world experience, build a network, and develop skills that set you apart. They’ve also helped shape my future plans. I’ve already been accepted to about six colleges, but since my apprenticeship is for three years, I plan to complete it first. After finishing high school in June 2025, I hope to study biology or nursing in Florida to pursue my dream of working in healthcare.

If you’re considering an apprenticeship, take the leap. The journey will challenge you, teach you, and ultimately prepare you for success in ways you can’t imagine. Whether your aspirations lie in public service, healthcare, or any other field, the skills and confidence you’ll gain will open doors to countless opportunities.

Youth apprenticeships are an investment in your future. And they’re worth it.
