When I began my youth apprenticeship at Vectra Bank, I had no idea how transformative the experience would be—not just for my career, but for my personal growth, confidence, and future aspirations. As I prepare to transfer to CU Boulder to continue pursuing my finance degree, I’ve taken time to reflect on the most impactful lessons I’ve learned. These are the top ten:
- Time Management Is a Game-Changer
Balancing college coursework, assignments, and an apprenticeship is no small feat. It taught me how to prioritize, stay organized, and adapt when plans change. These skills have become essential to both my academic and professional success.
- The Right Employer Supports Your Education
From the beginning, Vectra Bank emphasized that school came first. Whether I needed time off for exams, classes, or office hours, they were flexible and supportive. That kind of understanding has made a world of difference.
- Deadlines Matter—Everywhere
Meeting deadlines isn’t just a school requirement—it’s a professional expectation. At Vectra Bank, I learned how to manage tasks efficiently and stay ahead of schedule, which gave me a strong foundation for college and beyond.
- Communication Is a Professional Superpower
Working alongside experienced professionals helped me become more confident in expressing my ideas, asking questions, and advocating for myself. These communication skills have translated directly into my academic life as well.
- Apprenticeship Brings Career Clarity
I’ve always been interested in finance, but working inside a bank confirmed that this is the path I wish to pursue. Observing how departments like property management and financial reporting collaborate gave me a clearer picture of the industry.
- You Don’t Have to Choose Between Work and School
Many students think it’s either college or a job—but my experience proved otherwise. Vectra Bank worked with my schedule, and I’ll continue my apprenticeship remotely while studying in Boulder.
- Flexibility Opens Doors
When I decided to transfer from MSU Denver to CU Boulder, Vectra Bank didn’t just accommodate the change—they supported it. I’ll continue working with Vectra Bank from a branch in Boulder and staying connected with the team.
- Long-Term Relationships Create Real Value
After nearly two years at Vectra Bank has invested in me, and I’m committed to growing with them. I’ve built meaningful relationships and gained valuable experience. This isn’t just a job—it’s a steppingstone in my career journey.
- Learning from Professionals Is Invaluable
Mentors like my supervisor, Jim Yankovich, and others on the team shared insights and advice that no textbook could offer. Their guidance has been instrumental in my development.
- All It Takes Is One Opportunity
I’m incredibly grateful that Vectra Bank took a chance on me. I hope more employers will do the same for other students. We’re eager to learn—all it takes is for someone to believe in us.
If you’re a student considering a youth apprenticeship, my advice is simple: go for it. You’ll gain real-world skills, grow personally and professionally, and get a head start on your future. And employers—take the chance. We’re ready to show you what we can do.
