On June 11th and June 12th of 2018, CareerWise hosted it’s second National-Partners Site Visit. Nearly 50 individuals from eight different states (California, Indiana, Montana, Nevada, New York, South Carolina, Washington and Washington, D.C.) spent time with CareerWise and our partners to learn about what modern youth apprenticeship look like in theory—and in practice.
We went deep on various elements of our youth apprenticeship system design, including partnerships with employers, schools, higher education institutions and the state. Attendees learned what the program looks like in practice by speaking with current apprentices and their supervisors at Home Advisor, one of our flagship business partners which currently employs eight apprentices across two cohorts. While there, HomeAdvisor CEO Chris Terrill spoke about his belief in youth apprenticeship and how productive and impressive their apprentices are, and how they’re making significant contributions within their respective teams. Those contributions are all the more impressive because the apprentices are only one year into the three-year program and are out-performing productivity projections.
By the end of the two-day visit we heard many affirmations from attendees about the promise they believe this model holds and their aspirations to start similar systems in their home states. We look forward to playing a supportive role to these states as they build rigorous modern youth-apprenticeship programs of their own.
