Recording a self video for your Hub profile can be intimidating. We get it! This video is supposed to help employers learn more about you and your interests.
Let’s talk about how you can create a great profile video!
Get your video location ready.
- Find a well lit, quiet location to record.
- Your background should be empty, like a blank wall, to ensure the focus of the video is on you!
- Avoid spots that have echos, like big empty rooms.
- Sit in a chair that’s stationary and quiet – avoid swivel chairs or chairs that might squeak.
- Make sure there aren’t any shadows that are blocking your face.
Write a script.
- Start by introducing yourself.
- Try not to repeat information that you’ve already filled out in the profile creation process.
- Answer 2-3 questions or prompts in the video. Here are some suggestions:
- Why are you interested in an apprenticeship?
- What’s your favorite subject in school and why?
- What do you like to do in your free time and why?
- Describe your dream job.
- Do you participate in any after school activities? What are they and why do you enjoy them?
- If you could be an animal for a day, what would you be and why?
- How would your friends or a relative describe you?
- What is something you wish you could learn about at school?
- Talk about a challenge you faced and how you overcame it.
Test your video and audio.
- Set up your recording spot as if you were about to record to make sure everything is working and looks right.
- Confirm your computer or phone’s camera and microphone are working.
- Set your camera on a steady surface.
- Place the camera so that it’s filming you from the shoulders up.
- Do a quick test video to make sure everything looks good. Your face should be clearly visible at all times!
Rehearse, rehearse, rehearse!
- With your script, practice rehearsing what you plan to say in the video.
- Try to rehearse enough so that you can speak comfortably without needing to look down at your script.
- Record each rehearsal and review the video to see where you can improve.
- The video should be at least 1 minute long, but no longer than 2 minutes. Adjust your script after rehearsing if the video is too long or short!
- Speak naturally! Avoid talking too fast, make sure to speak clearly and slowly enough for the viewer to understand what you’re saying.
Record your profile video.
- Set aside enough time to record so you don’t feel rushed in case you need to record multiple videos.
- Make sure your environment is ready for the recording by doing the following:
- Turn off the TV or music.
- Ask friends and family (and pets!) to stay out of the area during the recording.
- Silence your cell phone.
- Close nearby windows to avoid traffic noises or outside distractions.
- Sit up straight, smile, and always look into the camera.
- Take a deep breath before recording and remember – you got this!
- Take multiple recordings if needed.
Watch your final video.
- After recording, take some time and watch the video.
- Make sure you are seen and heard clearly.
- If you find issues that you would like to change, re-record!
- Have friends and family watch to help find any mistakes that you’re missing.
